Netflix releases 'A Different World' sequel featuring new Hillman College students

Netflix has released a sequel series to the iconic sitcom ‘A Different World,’ returning viewers to the fictional Hillman College. The new production, guided by executive producer Debbie Allen and showrunner Felicia Pride, follows a new generation of students while integrating legacy characters from the original series.

The series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of original protagonists Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. The ensemble cast includes Alijah Kai, Kennedi Reece, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Chibuikem Uche. Original cast members such as Cree Summer, Jasmine Guy, and Darryl M. Bell also appear in supporting roles.

Critics and viewers have noted that the sequel functions as a continuation rather than a reboot, addressing modern themes relevant to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), such as funding challenges, enrollment management, and contemporary social activism. While some reviews highlight an uneven narrative pace in later episodes, the series has trended highly on streaming platforms, sparking significant social media engagement.
