Netflix series Below concludes with climate change themes
The Netflix mini-series ‘Below’ concludes its six-episode run with an open-ended finale that explores themes of climate change and corporate greed. Set in Newfoundland, the story follows fisherman Calvin Penney as he navigates the conflict between the local community of Snooks Arm and the Crocker family, who seek to relocate the village for mining interests.
The series reveals that the perceived supernatural threat, a giant cephalopod known as Mudder, is actually a biological consequence of warming waters. The creature’s nesting grounds in the ice are being displaced by melting glaciers. While the finale shows Calvin successfully thwarting military strikes and mining plans, the final shot reveals a sea of icebergs drifting toward the village, suggesting that the environmental consequences of the climate crisis are far from over.
Despite the cliffhanger ending, there are currently no plans for a second season, as the production was intended to be a limited series.
