Netflix series Below explores ecological horror and giant sea creatures

The Netflix horror series Below, created by Jesse McKeown, follows the character Calvin, played by Josh Hartnett, as he confronts a mysterious marine creature terrorizing the community of Snook’s Arm. The narrative shifts from cosmic horror toward ecological science fiction, revealing that the creature, a giant squid named Mudder, is driven to attack by rising ocean temperatures and the need to protect its eggs in colder waters.

As the story progresses, it is revealed that the icebergs appearing near the community are actually nests formed by a viscous membrane. While some characters view the creature as a threat, others, including Dr. Fonda played by Mackenzie Davis, suggest the attacks are linked to maternal instincts. The series concludes with the suggestion that more giant cephalopods may exist in the region, as new nests are discovered.
