Netflix series ‘Die Kaiserin’ filmed across Europe

The Netflix series ‘Die Kaiserin’ (The Empress) utilized various European locations to recreate the imperial Austrian court without ever filming in Vienna. For the first season, production focused heavily on Bavaria, specifically around Bayreuth and Bamberg, with interior shots filmed at Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam.

Key locations include Schloss Weissenstein in Pommersfelden, which served as the backdrop for much of the Viennese court and Schönbrunn Palace across all three seasons. The Eremitage in Bayreuth was also used for significant scenes, including the engagement of Franz and Elisabeth.

As the series progressed, filming expanded to include locations in the Czech Republic and Italy. The third and final season introduces Spanish settings along the Costa Brava to reflect Elisabeth’s travels to a distant island. The series finale, starring Devrim Lingnau and Philip Froissant, is scheduled for release on November 12, 2026.
