Netflix series ‘Downtime’ explores cosmetic surgery industry

At a premiere screening event for the Netflix original series ‘Downtime’, cast members and director Yuki Saito discussed the upcoming drama, which explores the complexities and realities of the cosmetic surgery industry. The series, scheduled for release on September 17, follows a protagonist played by Mayu Matsuoka who begins working as a cosmetic surgeon.

During the event, actress Minami Tanaka shared an anecdote regarding the show’s highly realistic special effects makeup. She recounted mistaking a lifelike mannequin for a sleeping actor and suggesting to staff that the person be covered with a blanket, only to be told the figure was a prop. Tanaka praised the realism of the prosthetics, noting that the distinction between makeup and natural features is intentionally blurred.

Other cast members in attendance included Riisa Naka, Shotaro Mamiya, Hiromi Nagasaku, and Atsuro Watabe. The series aims to depict the hopes, conflicts, and hidden aspects of those pursuing physical transformation in an era of shifting beauty standards.
