Netflix series ‘Downtime’ explores the ethics of cosmetic surgery
The Netflix original series ‘Downtime’ premiered on September 17, 2026, exploring the complex ethics and realities of the cosmetic surgery industry. The drama follows Aya Numata (played by Mayu Matsuoka), a talented emergency and plastic surgeon who views cosmetic procedures as ‘an invasion of the human body.’ After leaving her university hospital, she begins working under Rin Toyama (played by Risa Nakao), a charismatic surgeon who believes in ‘saving people through beauty.’
To ensure high levels of realism, the production team conducted extensive research over six months. Director Yuki Saito and screenwriter Junya Ikegami interviewed a wide range of individuals, including first-time patients, those with high-frequency surgical histories, individuals diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder, and medical professionals ranging from established clinics like Takasu Clinic to young practitioners in Kabukicho.
The series utilizes advanced special effects makeup to realistically depict the ‘downtime’—the recovery period involving swelling and bruising—following various procedures such as rhinoplasty and breast augmentation. The narrative aims to challenge viewer preconceptions by portraying the diverse motivations and struggles of patients through the evolving perspective of the protagonist.
