Netflix series East of Eden adapts John Steinbeck novel
A new Netflix mini-series based on John Steinbeck’s novel ‘East of Eden’ has premiered, written by Zoe Kazan. The production represents a significant artistic undertaking, as Kazan spent six years developing the adaptation while navigating her family legacy as the granddaughter of director Elia Kazan, who helmed the 1955 film version.
Unlike the previous cinematic adaptation, the series aims to cover a much larger portion of the original book. The narrative focuses on the conflict between brothers Adam and Charles Trask, exploring themes of inheritance, morality, and the impact of parental preference. The series also provides deeper character development for Cathy, portrayed by Florence Pugh, moving beyond the mythic villain archetype to explore her history of survival and trauma.
