Portobello and Maschi Veri highlight Italian social and judicial themes

Several new television productions are highlighting significant Italian cultural and social themes. The miniseries ‘Portobello’, directed by Marco Bellocchio and produced by HBO Max, explores the real-life judicial scandal of the 1980s involving popular TV host Enzo Tortora. Tortora was wrongfully accused of mafia ties based on false testimony from organized crime members, a case that deeply divided Italy before his eventual exoneration and subsequent death from cancer.

In contemporary drama, the second season of the Netflix series ‘Maschi Veri’ (an adaptation of the Spanish series ‘Machos Alfa’) premieres on October 7. The show continues to explore the deconstruction of toxic masculinity through the lives of four male friends. The new episodes focus on the practical challenges of applying these social lessons to real-world relationships, highlighting themes of vulnerability, gender equality, and emotional growth.
