Lalka adaptations spark debate among Polish actors and audiences
The classic novel ‘Lalka’ by Bolesław Prus is undergoing multiple modern adaptations, sparking significant debate among Polish actors and audiences. A Netflix series directed by Paweł Maślona, which offers a modernized take on the story, has divided opinion. While actress Grażyna Szapołowska praised its fresh approach and educational value, actor Daniel Olbrychski criticized the production's visual scale and directorial choices, suggesting it wasted resources. Similarly, actor Marek Kondrat expressed dissatisfaction with the series, stating it failed to meet the intellectual standards of the original work.
In contrast to the Netflix series, a new feature film adaptation directed by Maciej Kawalski is scheduled for release on September 30, 2026. This production aims for greater fidelity to the source material and features Marek Kondrat in the role of Ignacy Rzecki, marking his return to the big screen after 16 years. The film is also driving commercial interest, with coffee chains like So Coffee and Costa Coffee launching themed promotions, including specialty teas inspired by the 19th-century setting.
On the global stage, the Netflix series has seen fluctuating performance; while it maintained the top spot in Poland, it recently dropped out of the US Top 10 after two days, though it remains popular in several other international markets.
