Netflix shifts strategy to embrace theatrical box office reporting

Netflix is shifting its long-standing strategy by embracing theatrical exclusivity and disclosing box office performance data. The streaming giant plans to begin reporting weekend box office results for six specific theatrical releases, starting with ‘La Bola Negra’ on October 16.

The new theatrical lineup includes ‘La Bola Negra’, ‘The Mosquito Bowl’, David Fincher’s ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ starring Brad Pitt, and Danny Boyle’s ‘Ink’. ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth’ is scheduled for a two-week global IMAX run in late November 2026 before moving to the streaming platform in December.

Looking further ahead, the company’s slate includes Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ and an animated ‘Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory’ slated for 2027. This pivot marks a departure from Netflix’s previous habit of treating cinema performance as secondary to its streaming narrative, instead using high-profile auteur films to drive theatrical conversation and prestige.
