Netflix closes Night School and Moonloot game studios
Netflix is closing two of its game development studios, Night School Studio and Moonloot, as part of a strategic reorganization. Night School, the Los Angeles-based developer behind the acclaimed title Oxenfree, was Netflix’s first studio acquisition in 2021. The closure comes just six weeks after the studio released Unhinged, a horror game that co-CEO Greg Peters recently described as having “really solid numbers” during an investor call.
Moonloot, a Helsinki-based studio founded by Netflix in 2022, is also being shut down before it could release a game. In addition to these closures, Netflix is implementing unspecified staff cuts within its internal games division.
A company spokesperson stated that the changes are intended to allow the company to be “more focused in our execution” by prioritizing specific categories: kids gaming, party games, story-driven content, and titles with mainstream appeal, such as its recent FIFA title. This move marks a continued retreat from owned game development, following the previous closures of Team Blue and Boss Fight Entertainment.
