Netflix to reboot 'A Different World' in September 2026

Netflix is set to release a reboot of the television series ‘A Different World’ on September 24, 2026. The new series follows Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at the fictional Hillman College. Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah Wayne, while original cast members including Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Darryl M. Bell, and Cree Summer will reprise their roles.

Debbie Allen, an alumna of Howard University and former producer/director of the original show, returns as an executive producer and will direct the premiere episode. The original sitcom, which aired from 1987 to 1993, was noted for its portrayal of life at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Data from the National Center for Education Statistics indicates that HBCU enrollment saw a 26% increase between 1976 and 1994, with significant growth occurring during the original show's broadcast run.

Original cast members have remained active in the industry; for instance, Jasmine Guy continues to work in television and film and received an Emmy in 2023.
