Netflix releases ‘A Different World’ sequel featuring new generation at Hillman College

A Different World Netflix HBCU sitcom sequel Hillman College

Netflix has released a 10-episode sequel to the classic sitcom ‘A Different World,’ which premiered on September 24, 2026. The series returns to the fictional Hillman College, a historically Black college (HBCU), focusing on a new generation of students.

The narrative centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of original characters Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. As a freshman, Deborah navigates her own identity while dealing with her parents' significant legacy on campus. The new cast includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, and Chibuikem Uche.

Original cast members Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Lena James) all return to the series. The production was filmed extensively in Atlanta, utilizing locations at Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University to maintain authenticity regarding HBCU culture.

While the first season is now available for streaming, Netflix has not yet officially renewed the series for a second season, pending audience metrics and completion rates.
