Melissa McCarthy to star in Netflix's JonBenét Ramsey series

Actress Melissa McCarthy is set to star in the Netflix limited series ‘The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey’, premiering December 10, 2026. McCarthy, who also serves as an executive producer, will portray Patsy Ramsey, while Clive Owen plays John Ramsey. The series explores the 1996 unsolved killing of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey and the subsequent media frenzy and public judgment faced by the family.

In recent interviews with Variety, McCarthy discussed her preparation for the role, noting that researching the case led her to feel a deep compassion for the family and a sense of responsibility for the lack of humanity shown toward them by the public. She described the project as a character study of those caught in the aftermath of the tragedy.

McCarthy also addressed the current state of the film industry, criticizing the notion that mainstream comedies no longer work. She argued that studios have moved away from character-driven stories in favor of algorithm-driven, high-concept premises. Reflecting on her career, she expressed a desire for more sequels to her 2015 hit ‘Spy’, suggesting the film had the potential for a long-running franchise.

Additionally, McCarthy was named an honoree for Variety’s 2026 Power of Women issue, recognizing her philanthropic work with the Joyful Heart Foundation, which supports victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
