Netflix to release Mexican film inspired by Hurricane Otis survivors

Netflix will premiere the Mexican film ‘Contra el huracán’ (Against the Hurricane) on October 23. Directed by Jorge Michel Grau, the production is inspired by the real-life survival story of two sailors who endured the devastating Category 5 Hurricane Otis, which struck Acapulco in October 2023.

The film follows two half-siblings, Wirpul and Candi, played by Benny Emmanuel and Kristyan Ferrer, who find themselves trapped at sea as the storm intensifies. The narrative explores their struggle to survive extreme maritime conditions while simultaneously navigating their complicated personal relationship.

To ensure authenticity, the production utilized Marlon Valdez and Jonathan Chino—sailors who survived the actual event—as advisors. The film aims to reconstruct the harrowing experience of those caught in the path of one of the most destructive meteorological phenomena recorded on the Guerrero coast.
