Netflix releases ‘Below’ thriller starring Josh Hartnett

Netflix has released ‘Below’, a six-episode limited thriller series set in the remote fishing community of Snook’s Arm, Newfoundland. Created by Jesse McKeown, the series stars Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a fisherman haunted by his father’s mysterious death decades earlier.

The plot follows Calvin and marine researcher Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis, as they investigate a mysterious sea creature terrorizing the local waters. Beyond the supernatural horror elements, the series explores themes of climate change, environmental decline, and the socio-economic pressures facing isolated communities, including government resettlement programs.

While some critics have compared the show to ‘Widow’s Bay’, the creators have noted that ‘Below’ is a distinct, bespoke production. Despite an open-ended finale that suggests further maritime threats, showrunner Jesse McKeown has indicated that the series was intended as a self-contained story with no current plans for a second season.
