Netflix to release Wu-Tang Clan documentary ‘The Disciple’
Netflix has announced the release date for ‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable’, a biographical documentary scheduled to debut on October 16, 2026. Directed by Academy Award-winning producer Joanna Natasegara in her feature directorial debut, the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2026.
The documentary follows the life of Dutch-Moroccan rapper Cilvaringz, also known as Tarik Azzougarh. It traces his journey from a dedicated fan to becoming a member of the Wu-Tang Clan’s inner circle, where he was mentored by founding member RZA, who also serves as an executive producer for the film.
A central focus of the film is the creation of the controversial album ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin’. To protest the digital age and assert the intrinsic value of music as art, only one official copy of the 31-track record was produced. The single copy was auctioned in 2015 for $2 million to entrepreneur Martin Shkreli, making it the most expensive musical work ever sold.
