Netflix unveils new horror series “Below” set in Newfoundland

Netflix released the first look at “Below,” a six‑episode limited horror series created by Jesse McKeown, known for The Umbrella Academy. The show stars Josh Hartnett as fisherman Calvin Penney, Mackenzie Davis as marine researcher Fonda, and Charlie Heaton as his son Wade, alongside an ensemble cast.

Set in a remote town on Newfoundland’s coast, the plot follows Penney as a mysterious sea creature begins terrorising the community, forcing him to protect his family and uncover the island’s buried secrets. Filming took place in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The series draws on local myths and the region’s harsh maritime history, with McKeown citing Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter as influences.

Below” will premiere on Netflix on October 8.
