Netflix uses artificial intelligence in 300 productions
Netflix has utilized artificial intelligence in approximately 300 of its films and series globally. Lee Sung-gyun, Netflix's production director for the Asia-Pacific region, disclosed this information during the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
The technology is applied across various production stages, including pre-visualization, production design, set development, editing, and visual effects. Netflix demonstrated a “hybrid production” concept through its visual effects studio, Eyeline, which combines live-action footage with digital effects and generative AI tools. One specific application includes creating large crowd scenes, such as those used in the Indian production “Glory.”
Industry experts noted that AI can significantly impact production costs and timelines. Director Kang Yoon-sung estimated that AI could reduce a feature film's budget by 30% to 40%, citing a real reduction of approximately 40% for the film “The Gulf of Aden.” While AI can make projects viable that might otherwise be canceled due to budget constraints, creators emphasized that human intervention remains essential for conveying emotion and maintaining the collective creative experience.
