The series rose to the top of Netflix’s TV rankings for the week of July 27, outpacing other popular titles and joining strong performances from movies such as "A Toxic Love Story" and the comedy "72 Hours."

The series recounts the November 13, 2022 killings of four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin—by suspect Bryan Kohberger. Critics note that the documentary prioritises dramatic pacing over forensic depth, omitting key details such as the eight‑hour gap between the estimated time of the murders and the 911 call, and the initial misidentification of Kohberger’s white Hyundai Elantra model year, which later required a forensic review to correct.
