Netflix's Little House on the Prairie reboot set in Independence, Kansas
Netflix has launched a new eight‑episode adaptation of "Little House on the Prairie" that moves the Ingalls family’s story from Walnut Grove, Minnesota to Independence, Kansas. The shift follows the early books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, where the family initially settles on the Kansas prairie before later moving east. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine based the series on Wilder’s memoirs rather than the later television pilot by Michael Landon. The reboot features a new cast portraying Charles, Caroline, Mary and Laura Ingalls and debuted on July 9, 2026.
The change in setting has prompted discussion among fans of the classic series, noting that the original 1970s show also briefly depicted the family’s Kansas period before they arrived in Walnut Grove. The Netflix version expands that chapter, situating the entire narrative in Independence and exploring the challenges of frontier life in that region.
