Netherlands 19-Year-Old Charged with Reckless Driving in Fatal Vogelwaarde Crash

Dutch prosecutors have charged a 19‑year‑old driver with reckless driving after a collision in the village of Vogelwaarde, in the Zeeuws‑Vlaanderen region, killed three children and an adult and injured several others. The suspect, identified as a resident of Hulst, is accused of causing a traffic accident with death and serious injury.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) says the case falls under the most serious traffic offence under Dutch law, requiring proof that the driver acted with extreme negligence, created a grave danger, and was aware or should have been aware of that danger. Details of the driver’s conduct – such as speed or possible intoxication – have not been disclosed while the investigation continues. The crash involved a group from a school camp that was struck on a local road. Authorities are conducting forensic analyses, vehicle telemetry checks and witness interviews before the case proceeds to court.
