Netherlands adopts heat measures for Opmeer agricultural show and garden care

The Opmeer agricultural show in the Netherlands will activate a heat protocol when temperatures reach 27 °C or higher. Organisers will provide shaded areas, extra drinking water for visitors and animals, and additional water hoses for horses in line with KNHS guidelines. Inspections may be moved to cooler morning hours, and attendees are urged to wear light clothing, use sunscreen stations and bring refillable water bottles.

Garden specialist Floor Korte advises Dutch gardeners to water plants in the evening rather than during the day, use generous amounts of water at once, and protect soil with organic mulch. She recommends keeping grass longer to retain moisture and avoiding short, frequent watering. These tips aim to reduce plant stress during the ongoing heatwave that has pushed daytime temperatures to around 30 °C.
