Netherlands advances energy transition via heat pipelines and geothermal research
Energy infrastructure and research projects are advancing in the Netherlands to facilitate the transition from natural gas to sustainable heating sources.
In the Leiden and Voorschoten region, the WarmtelinQ project, led by Gasunie, is installing a 1.5-kilometer heat transport pipeline. This milestone involves pulling a massive pipe through a transport hole to connect the Stevenshof district in Leiden to the Hofweg in Voorschoten. The network aims to provide residual heat from the Port of Rotterdam to approximately 120,000 homes and businesses. This specific section is expected to be operational by the second half of 2028.
Simultaneously, SCAN Aardwarmte is launching a new 2D seismic investigation across fifteen municipalities starting in September. Using sound waves and ground microphones to map subsurface structures, the research aims to determine the suitability of geothermal energy as a future heat source for residential and commercial use. This study complements previous 3D seismic research conducted in the region to create a more comprehensive map of the deep underground.
