Netherlands advances local energy transition through new funds and heat recovery projects

The municipality of Arnhem has launched the Local Energy Projects Development Fund to support resident-led sustainability initiatives. The fund provides subsidies of up to €50,000 per project, with an initial total allocation of €300,000. This support is intended for the preparatory phases of energy projects, such as feasibility studies, project planning, and establishing legal organizations, helping residents transition toward a gas-free future.

In a separate development in the Drechtsteden and Gorinchem regions, the public environmental company HVC has opened two sustainable heat projects. One project utilizes heat from sewage sludge to supply over 2,100 homes in Sliedrecht and Dordrecht via a 1,200-meter pipeline under the Merwede river. Another project in Gorinchem employs Thermal Energy from Wastewater (TEA) to extract heat from purified sewage. These initiatives are part of HVC’s broader climate strategy and its 2035 ambitions to advance the regional energy and resource transition.
