Netherlands advances wind energy through North Sea and onshore studies
The Netherlands is advancing its renewable energy transition through new geological and feasibility studies for wind energy development. In the Dutch North Sea, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has designated search areas 6/7 for the potential development of approximately 19 gigawatts of new offshore wind capacity.
To support this, Tetra Tech has conducted geological desk studies to identify suitable development areas. These studies provide data on ground conditions, stratigraphy, and geotechnical properties to help de-risk offshore wind farm development and inform future engineering decisions regarding turbine foundations.
On land, a joint investigation is underway in the Diemerscheg region involving the Province of Noord-Holland and the municipalities of Amsterdam, Diemen, and Gooise Meren. This project, conducted alongside Staatsbosbeheer and Rijkswaterstaat, is examining five potential areas for wind energy generation. The investigation focuses on technical and financial feasibility, as well as environmental impacts such as noise, shadow flicker, ecology, and heritage sites like the Hollandse Waterlinies.
