Netherlands allocates €35 million to strengthen global diplomatic network

The Dutch government has allocated €35 million to strengthen its global network of embassies and consulates. This investment effectively reverses half of a previous €70 million structural budget cut for diplomatic posts.

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Berendsen, the allocation decisions are based on the changing geopolitical landscape, Dutch economic interests, and the welfare of Dutch citizens living abroad. The funding will support the opening of new embassies and investments in existing diplomatic locations.

As part of this restructuring, several previous decisions are being reversed: the consulate-general in Antwerp will remain open, and the planned closure of the embassy in Juba, South Sudan, has been cancelled. Additionally, the diplomatic presence in Damascus will be expanded. However, some closures will proceed, including embassies in Tripoli, Bujumbura, Yangon, and Harare, as well as the consulate-general in Rio de Janeiro. In these locations, Dutch interests will be managed through other regional embassies.
