Netherlands allocates funds for nature and agriculture in new budget

The Dutch government's annual budget, known as the Miljoenennota, includes hundreds of millions of euros earmarked for nature restoration and the agricultural sector. As part of a broader 20 billion euro nitrogen and nature package, the Jetten Cabinet intends to allocate 500 million euros to agricultural nature management and over 400 million euros to nature restoration. The agricultural sector is also set to receive significant sustainability support for initiatives such as organic farming and reducing livestock emissions.

Despite the funding, stakeholders in the De Peel region have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of these plans. Mario Berkers, chairman of ZLTO De Peel, noted that true nature restoration depends on farmers receiving necessary permits, a point he claims is missing from the current proposals. Wim van Opbergen of Werkgroep Behoud de Peel expressed cautious optimism, stating that while the plans are a step in the right direction, success requires significant nitrogen reduction, increased water levels around De Peel, and a decrease in the use of agricultural pesticides.

Finance Minister Eelco Heinen stated that the government aims to solve the nitrogen problem by simplifying regulations and adopting an integrated approach to agriculture, nature, and nitrogen to create a future-proof agricultural sector.
