Netherlands asylum debate sharpens as politicians and media critique protest tactics

JA21 leader Joost Eerdmans warned against the continual use of provocative stunts in Dutch politics, saying that real work happens in the Tweede Kamer through legislation and policy influence. He criticised Geert Wilders’ habit of staging symbolic actions at asylum centres, such as the planned facility in Loosdrecht, arguing that such displays add little to concrete solutions.

Pieter Klok, editor‑in‑chief of De Volkskrant, lamented that asylum seekers themselves are rarely heard in public debates. He called for a more humane approach and highlighted a new book by a COA employee that depicts refugees’ lives in detail, urging society to regain its humanity and improve integration efforts.
