Netherlands bankruptcies rise 9 percent in August 2026
In August 2026, the number of company bankruptcies in the Netherlands rose to 304, representing a 9 percent increase compared to the same month the previous year. Data released by the Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) shows this is an increase of 24 bankruptcies year-on-year and 38 more than in July.
The bankruptcy rate, measured as the number of bankruptcies per 100,000 companies, reached 8.1, up from 7.6 in August 2025. The hospitality sector recorded the highest relative bankruptcy rate at 21 per 100,000 companies, though this was a decrease from the 30.8 recorded a year earlier.
Other notable shifts include the industrial sector, which had a rate of 20.1 per 100,000 companies. Significant increases in bankruptcy rates were also observed in the construction industry (rising from 10.7 to 16.5), rental and business services (doubling from 7.8 to 15.8), and the information and communication sector (rising from 6.9 to 11.7). Conversely, rates in trade and transport/storage saw declines.
