Netherlands budget negotiations stall as coalition partners disagree

The Dutch minority government is facing significant internal friction as coalition partners D66 and CDA express disagreement with the VVD over the 2027 budget. Negotiations have stalled, leading to the cancellation of scheduled talks with opposition parties.

Key points of contention include Box 3 taxation, specifically regarding how capital gains and wealth are taxed. While the VVD seeks a more right-leaning fiscal approach, D66 and CDA leaders are pushing for broader support, suggesting more involvement from the opposition party Pro to ensure a wider consensus.

Finance Minister Eelco Heinen stated that the deadline for submitting the budget to the Council of State is Monday, rather than the previously discussed Friday. If an agreement is not reached among coalition members, the cabinet may submit the budget without prior opposition support, necessitating a search for majorities in the House and Senate during subsequent parliamentary debates.
