Netherlands celebrates Open Monument Day with resilient heritage events

The annual Open Monument Day (Open Monumentendag) in 2026 focuses on the theme “Veerkrachtig erfgoed” (Resilient heritage). Across the country, thousands of historic sites open their doors free of charge on 12‑13 September, showcasing how monuments adapt to changing circumstances.

The national opening takes place on 11 September in Flevoland at the Bataviawerf in Lelystad. A specially produced show, “Tussen zee en morgen – In vogelvlucht door veerkrachtig Flevoland,” follows the character Olivia and a kite‑hawk guide as they tell the story of the province’s reclaimed land and pioneer heritage. The ceremony is officiated by loco‑commissioner Jan Klopman and Open Monument Day ambassador Janny van der Heijden, followed by a discovery trail of seven highlighted monuments illuminated by light‑painters.

In Veldhoven, local celebrations are scheduled for 13 September at Museum ’t Oude Slot and Kinderboerderij De Hazewinkel. Activities for children and adults aim to strengthen community involvement in preserving and revitalising historic buildings, churches, local traditions and crafts, underscoring the idea that heritage remains vibrant when residents are engaged.
