Netherlands child water safety rules warn parents of drowning risks

Dutch health and safety experts outline four essential supervision rules for parents and caregivers of young children at pools, beaches or lakes: keep the child always in sight, avoid any distractions, stay within arm's reach, and never walk away without passing supervision to another adult. The guidance stresses that drowning can occur silently within minutes, so constant, close attention is crucial.

In addition, swim instructors advise against blue swimwear for children because it blends with the water, reducing visibility. Bright colours such as orange, yellow or red are recommended to improve sightlines and help prevent accidents. Together, these measures aim to reduce the high risk of drowning among young children in the Netherlands.
