Netherlands CO2 emissions rise as coal-fired export power increases, NEa reports

The Netherlands' CO2 emissions rose again, not primarily because domestic consumption spiked, but because energy companies were required more often to inject electricity into export flows. One official commented that 'Toch is het systeem zo bedoeld' regarding this export-driven dynamic.

According to the Dutch Emissieautoriteit (NEa) annual report, the largest emitters under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) produced about 72 million tonnes of CO2 in 2025, up 2.3% from the previous year.

Both items together highlight ongoing CO2 emissions within the Netherlands’ energy and industrial sectors.
