Netherlands coach Xavi Hernandez criticizes FIFA international window
Netherlands national team coach Xavi Hernandez has criticized FIFA’s decision to expand the international window, arguing that the current schedule poses significant risks to both players and clubs.
Following a change in format, FIFA combined the September and October international windows into a single 16-day period, requiring teams to play four matches within 11 days. Xavi stated that this packed calendar is “asking for trouble,” noting that the intensity increases the likelihood of injuries. The Netherlands have already been impacted, with only 23 fit players available for their upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Serbia in Eindhoven after several key players, including Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey, returned to their clubs due to injury.
Other managers, including England’s Thomas Tuchel, have expressed similar concerns regarding the risks created by shifts in training and play styles between club and national team environments. Xavi suggested that a format featuring only two international matches would be more sustainable for all parties involved.
