Netherlands debates funding for Caribbean Netherlands and reform packages

Dutch lawmakers Heera Dijk and Don Ceder have introduced a motion demanding that the 30 million euros annually allocated to strengthen existence security in Caribbean Netherlands be used exclusively for new measures. The motion asserts that these funds should not be used to finance existing programs but should instead implement additional measures to lower the cost of living. The island councils of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba have expressed concerns that only a portion of the funds might be directed toward new initiatives. Minister of Social Affairs and Employment Hans Vijlbrief indicated he could support the motion.

Separately, the future of the 'landspakketten'—reform agreements between the Netherlands and Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten—is approaching a critical juncture. Following the 2020 COVID-19 crisis, financial support was linked to structural reforms in education, the business climate, and government services. As these agreements approach their end date, the 2027 budget will determine if funding will continue for the Temporary Work Organization (TWO), which supports the implementation of these reforms.
