Netherlands defence granted nitrogen exemption while farmers stay constrained

The Dutch cabinet has introduced a Defence Readiness Act that exempts the military from needing environmental permits for activities in Natura 2000 areas, allowing operations without complying with the EU Habitat and Birds Directives. The exemption is justified as a “higher public interest” and has been approved by the European Commission under an omnibus package for defence readiness.

Farmers, who have faced strict nitrogen limits, permit pressures and lengthy legal battles under the same EU rules, receive no comparable relief. Forum for Democracy MP Pepijn van Houwelingen criticized the double standard, arguing that the defence sector is being favoured while the agricultural sector remains burdened. The proposal is currently pending debate in the Dutch House of Representatives.
