Netherlands Defence strengthens ties with logistics sector and universities

The Dutch Ministry of Defence is expanding its cooperation with both the private logistics sector and academic institutions to enhance national resilience and innovation.

In a meeting at the ’t Harde military training ground, Defence and the logistics association Evofenedex discussed strategies to make the Dutch logistics system less vulnerable to disruptions. The goal is to reduce dependency on specific routes and players, ensuring the supply chain remains functional during crises such as blocked waterways or rail connections. Commander Han van Bussel noted that increased military readiness requires more logistical space, which may impact commercial capacity, necessitating a shared mindset between the military and the business community.

Simultaneously, the University Network Netherlands (UNL) has signed a letter of intent with the Ministry of Defence to increase collaboration. This follows a trend of universities and colleges seeking to contribute to societal issues like peace and security. As billions of euros are allocated to the Ministry of Defence for innovation, academic institutions aim to provide research and expertise. To address concerns regarding academic freedom and military secrecy, leaders have engaged in discussions to establish frameworks for cooperation that protect independent research while meeting security requirements.
