Netherlands demolition projects clear way for new housing

In Boskoop, the demolition of dozens of unsafe rental homes on Julianastraat and Oranjestraat began after two years of uncertainty for 46 displaced families. The homes were deemed structurally hazardous, prompting an urgent evacuation in early 2024. New rental units are planned for the site, with some former residents expected to return once construction is completed.

In Zoetermeer, the distinctive office building known as De Unie – nicknamed the “Hulk” – will be demolished later this year. The removal is part of a large‑scale redevelopment of the Bredewater area, which will create roughly a thousand new homes and upgrade public spaces. The project aims to address the local housing shortage and revitalize a district dominated by aging office structures.
