Netherlands deploys new truck toll cameras to enforce compliance

The Dutch transport authority (RDW) has installed new roadside cameras on highways to verify that trucks weighing 3.5 tonnes or more carry an active toll box. The system records licence plates and checks whether the vehicle is linked to a valid toll contract, whether the box is present and switched on, and whether it matches the registration.

Violations carry fines of €800 for lacking a toll contract and €500 for a non‑functional box. To ease the transition, these penalties are reduced by half for the first six months. From 1 July, tolls are charged per kilometre on main roads – over €0.20 per kilometre for diesel trucks and €0.038 per kilometre for electric trucks – while road tax for trucks has been lowered.

The cameras are mobile, staying at a single location for one or two days before being relocated elsewhere in the Netherlands. Enforcement is carried out by the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB).
