Netherlands drought persists despite forecast of incoming rain

Rain is forecast across the Netherlands for much of the week, potentially ending a prolonged dry spell. However, forecasters warn that the upcoming precipitation may not be sufficient to resolve the ongoing drought.

The ground has become so hardened by the heat that water from brief showers may struggle to penetrate the soil. The country currently remains at level two of a three-stage water shortage scale.

Low water levels in the Rhine have reached points not seen since 1947, impacting logistics by forcing cargo barges to run partially loaded and causing the cancellation of river cruises and ferries. Experts from the transport ministry suggest that low river flows could persist until December.
