Netherlands drought strains city trees and house foundations
A prolonged drought in the Netherlands has progressed from a threatened to a factual water shortage. Water boards imposed extraction bans, halted river pumping and expanded irrigation prohibitions, while low water levels disrupted shipping, agriculture and nature. Municipalities are increasing rain‑water retention through infiltration facilities and permeable paving.
Urban trees are suffering: fine‑spruces on sandy soils are dying from reduced resin production, making them vulnerable to insects, and beech trees are shedding leaves early to conserve moisture. Limited root space in city plantings further heightens their susceptibility.
Research by TNO and Deltares shows that repeated drying and re‑wetting of clay soils causes shrink‑swell cycles that can destabilise foundations, especially shallow or timber‑pile bases. Up to 75,000 homes are at acute risk and as many as 687,000 may be vulnerable across regions such as Drenthe, Brabant, Limburg and Overijssel. The Dutch government has earmarked €56 million for research, advisory services and a national risk‑mapping programme, with local information points to help homeowners assess and mitigate damage.
