Netherlands employee absenteeism remains historically high

Employee absenteeism in the Netherlands saw a slight decrease in July, falling to 4.7 percent from 4.8 percent in June. However, occupational health services ArboNed and HumanCapitalCare report that rates remain at a historically high level compared to previous years.

Year-on-year data shows an increase from 4.4 percent in July of the previous year. This rise is attributed primarily to an increase in long-term absenteeism. While the number of sick reports per 1,000 employees dropped from 49 in June to 38 in July, the overall percentage remains a concern for experts.

Stress-related illness is cited as a significant factor. Redmer van Wijngaarden, medical director at ArboNed, noted that while August is typically a quieter month due to vacations, a rise in absenteeism is often expected in September as employees transition back to daily routines and work obligations.
