Netherlands' Enexis rolls out new electricity grid priority system

Since 1 July a national connection stop has been imposed on the Dutch electricity grid. New requests for extra capacity – for electric stoves, heat pumps, floor heating or public EV chargers – are placed on a waiting list and are ranked according to a societal priority framework devised by the Authority for Consumers and Markets. Applications for fire stations, hospitals, defence or police rank highest, while most commercial projects and public charging points receive low priority. Enexis reports about 4,100 applications in the past six months, a 30‑40 % rise on the previous year.

Municipalities such as ’s‑Hertogenbosch have signed agreements with Enexis to expand and reinforce local net stations, creating a clearer roadmap for the needed grid upgrades. The cooperation aims to secure sufficient electricity for new homes, electric vehicles, heat pumps and other electrification measures, ensuring a safe and reliable network for residents and businesses in the region.
