Netherlands environmental and water management updates

Rijkswaterstaat has announced new information sessions scheduled for autumn 2026 to discuss the future of the Wadden Sea and the North Sea coast zone. These meetings aim to address new management plans for these internationally protected nature areas following research indicating environmental decline in certain parts of the region. The sessions will focus on finding a balance between nature restoration and the socio-economic impacts on local residents and businesses.

In a separate regional development, the Waterveiligheid en Ruimte Limburg (WRL) program has extended the deadline for its 'Kansenregeling' subsidy program until April 30, 2027. This initiative provides funding for measures to combat water flooding in Limburg. Following a first round that distributed approximately €4.5 million to 36 projects—including underground water buffers and innovative paving—roughly €5.5 million remains available for the second round to support municipalities, businesses, and private citizens.
