Netherlands expands electric vehicle charging potential

Research conducted by the Kadaster for ElaadNL indicates that approximately 2.5 million homes in the Netherlands have the potential for private electric vehicle charging stations. This assessment considers existing driveways as well as properties where new driveways could be implemented, evaluating factors such as street-side space, accessibility, and available parking. Expanding home charging capabilities is expected to reduce pressure on the public charging network, particularly for electric delivery vans that can charge overnight.

In the province of Drenthe, authorities are launching the 'Subsidie Opengestelde Laadpunten Drenthe' (SOLA) to encourage businesses and organizations to open their private charging points to the public. Starting in September 2026, subsidies will be available to help cover the costs of installing new stations or making existing ones accessible via payment cards or apps. This initiative aims to utilize existing electrical connections more efficiently to combat grid congestion, which currently makes establishing new connections increasingly difficult.
