Netherlands expands EV charging infrastructure and smart charging transparency

New initiatives in the Netherlands are addressing the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. NEN has launched a register for private charging stations that comply with the NTA 8043 standard for smart charging. This register allows manufacturers and importers to submit self-declarations of conformity, providing transparency for installers, consumers, and grid operators. Smart charging enables the process to align with dynamic energy tariffs and reduces pressure on the electricity grid.

In a related development, research by Kadaster for ElaadNL indicates that 2.5 million Dutch homes have the potential for home charging points. The study accounted for both existing driveways and parcels where new driveways could be installed, considering street space and accessibility. This data, available at the neighborhood level, is intended to help municipalities and grid operators determine where public charging infrastructure is most needed to balance the load on the power grid.
