Netherlands expands free rainwater advice as drought and flood risks persist

The municipality of Amersfoort and the regional water board Vallei en Veluwe have extended the free "rainwater advice" programme this summer. Residents can book personal sessions with rainwater coaches who suggest measures such as rain barrels, green paving and garden infiltration to retain water during dry spells and reduce runoff during heavy rains.

In northern Netherlands, recent rainfall has kept water levels sufficient in the province of Groningen, preventing an immediate irrigation ban for farmers. Water boards Hunze en Aa’s and Noorderzijlvest report normal groundwater levels and continue to draw water from the IJsselmeer to maintain river and canal flows, while monitoring the declining IJssel water level for future shortages.
