Netherlands expands temporary asylum shelters in Warffum and Doetinchem

The municipality of Het Hogeland in the province of Groningen opened a temporary night shelter at the Op Roakeldaishal in Warffum from 28 May to 1 June 2026. Up to 150 asylum‑seeker individuals are accommodated each night, with Red Cross staff providing security and supervision. The shelter operates on a request from the Minister of Asylum and Migration to relieve overcrowding at the Ter Apel centre.

In Doetinchem, the municipality activated a new centre on the Terburgseweg that can host 100 asylum seekers, including up to 50 unaccompanied minors, under a temporary arrangement that may last up to three years. A parallel plan envisions a permanent mixed community for 150 local residents and 150 asylum seekers, featuring full security, youth care, education and other services. Both locations are subject to local information evenings for residents.
