Netherlands expands walking networks and community initiatives
New initiatives in the Netherlands are promoting outdoor activity and social connection through walking. In Ouder-Amstel, the Stichting Gezond Natuur Wandelen is organizing a free nature walk on September 27 as part of the Week Against Loneliness. These walks aim to provide a low-threshold way for residents to meet neighbors and combat isolation through regular, informal movement.
In the Utrecht-Oost region, a new walking route network has officially opened. Spanning thirteen municipalities, including Amersfoort, Zeist, and Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the network features over 1,000 kilometers of connected, signposted routes. Using a node-based system similar to cycling networks, walkers can use orange signs to create custom routes through nature areas, villages, and heritage sites. The project was led by the Province of Utrecht and Routebureau Utrecht in collaboration with local municipalities and land managers.
